Ok, so anyone that knows me knows that I absolutely LOVE the Foo Fighters. I could listen to ‘The Pretender’ over and over again and it just never gets old. So, while listening to it the other day running on the treadmill at the gym, it struck a somewhat different chord with me and I started to think about how we are all pretenders, whether we want to be or not.
Our true divine nature is covered by this sheath of who we think we are, otherwise known as the ego. Ego keeps you separate from the Divine and from others. The ego keeps you ‘me-ing, ’ ‘my-ing’ and ‘I-ing.’ Your ego can show up in many different ways, such as, arrogance, greed, stubbornness, impatience, self-destructive behavior, even having a low self-esteem, being quiet and not wanting to be noticed. The ego can wear a number of different masks. We weren’t born with our ego, it was created within us since childhood, due to our dealings with the outside world. Over time, through various experiences, layer by layer, the ego took on a life of its own and it pretends to be you, but it’s not. Now, the ego isn’t necessarily a bad thing, although it does keep you separate from your original, open, loving nature…but that’s ok, you can work with it and eventually overcome it. You formed your ego as a means of protection, as a defense mechanism. Maybe when you were a little girl, your mom or dad said something that was hurtful or your teacher made you feel stupid in front of the class or you were bullied like crazy in school…Well, being the fact that you were just a little child and couldn’t actually process these heavy emotions, you created layers around you to protect you from feeling your feelings. Totally understandable, however, these layers serve no purpose in your adult life except for blocking you from allowing your real self to shine through. The ego holds these icky feelings in place and will project them onto every present and future experience that you go through. The ego causes you to live in fear… The ego was born in fear. The hurt feelings and distress that you felt caused you to conclude that life is inherently negative and you must do something to protect yourself from it. So you formed your ego and it probably kept you feeling safe for a while but make no mistake, the ego is a block. It blocks you from giving and receiving Love. It blocks you from accepting yourself and others. It blocks you from going to talk to that guy you think is cute. It blocks you from giving to others and helping others. It blocks you from going after that job you want. It blocks you from chasing your dreams and living your best life. Oh yes, the ego holds you back and keeps you playing small. It keeps you PRETENDING to be someone that you just aren’t! But who wants to live a fake life? A life pretending to be someone else? …you don’t have to pretend anymore. You don’t have to live in fear of your feelings. Feelings are just feelings… let them come to the surface, deal with them and release them. No problem! You got this!! A Meditation and Mantra practice will allow your consciousness to become quiet and still, giving everything that you’ve been burying for years and years a long over-due opportunity to come up to the surface, to be dealt with and released. Meditation will allow you to see yourself as you truly are…No mask, no crown, no curtain, no stories; just the eternal nature of your soul. Please be warned that your ego won’t go quietly…it does put up a bit of a fight and each and every day is a learning and detangling process. But you can only change what you are aware of…so once you start becoming conscious of yourself, of your words and actions, and begin to understand why you’re doing what you’re doing, it becomes easier and easier to change your ways…. And life looks so much different and becomes so beautiful and filled with magic when you stop pretending to be someone else and actually start BEING YOU!
