“Could you look an animal in the eyes and say to it, ‘My appetite is more important than your suffering’?”
- Moby I can’t even tell you how many times I have had heard this; “You’re vegan? What do you eat? Where do you get your protein from? I could never be vegan… I love my meat!” After breathing deeply, I lovingly explain; “It’s not your meat… it was the animals’ body…And I eat lots of delicious, healthy, living foods! Protein exists in abundance in nuts, vegetables and legumes…and choosing my food, compassionately, is always a creative experience! Being vegan is a lot of fun!” And this is true… Being vegan is actually a lot of fun! You don’t have to feel deprived or hungry, at all! There is a plethora of delicious, nutritious, living, easy-to-prepare, no-one-has-to-get-hurt-or-killed foods that you can eat! We have been brought up in a society that is drenched with meat, milk and cheese, which has only brought about sickness, sadness and devastation for our planet. We are brainwashed into thinking that these things are good for us by companies that don’t care about us, the animals or the planet. All they care about is making money and keeping the planet enslaved. By feeding you the corpses of innocent creatures, the pharmaceutical companies and health-care executives create customers for life! You will always be sick, fat and in need of medical intervention in order to feel alive. Is this really living?? It’s not like eating meat, cheese, milk or eggs is helping you, the animals or the planet… It’s actually hurting everyone involved. If you aren’t eating anything living, well then…you’re dying. I could go on and on about the horrors of the meat, cheese, milk and egg industry, but I will save that for another time. Right now I want to tell you about the joys of being vegan and how changing your diet will change your entire world! The big, #1 question that EVERY single meat-eater asks, “How do you get your protein?” Well, protein is found in almost all foods aside from alcohol, sugar and fats. So, that leaves vegans with plenty of room to acquire adequate protein…Actually, getting enough protein is the easy part about being vegan. Vegans get ample protein from foods that do not scream when being prepared like, tofu, chickpeas, lentils, quinoa, peanut butter (my personal favorite), almonds, spinach, broccoli, kale, potatoes, whole wheat bread, among many others. Yummy, yummy in the tummy. “What about calcium? Isn’t calcium only found in cow’s milk?” …Actually no, and my question is, “Why, in a country that guzzles milk like crazy, are there higher instances of osteoporosis?” It’s because of the lie about calcium and where you can get it from. See, dairy has high levels of concentrated protein and, what you have not been told, is that animal protein depletes calcium from the body. Yes, really. The high acidity in animal protein withdraws calcium from your bones in order to balance the pH in the blood. So, drinking milk + eating meat = osteoporosis. High acidity foods also cause excess uric acid, which piles up in the organs and muscles causing congestion and a whole host of other problems. Sounds awesome, right? Let’s look towards better ways to get your calcium…Tofu, dark leafy greens, okra (yum!!), almond butter, bok choy, tempeh, broccoli and tahini, just to name a few. And by simply replacing cow’s milk with soy milk, hemp milk, rice milk, coconut milk or almond milk, you don’t miss out on anything. No deprivation necessary. There’s even dairy-free ice-cream which I simply cannot get into my mouth fast enough. Let’s keep playing, shall we? “What do vegans eat?” The question should be, “What DON’T vegans eat?” And the answer would be, “We don’t eat death, misery and suffering. We eat living foods!” Vegans have the pleasure of eating hummus (which I eat by the spoonful!), veggie burgers of all flavors, tacos sans the death, EVERY vegetable known to man, NO fruit is off limits, beans, nuts, polenta, falafel, mock meat (which are actually VERY tasty! Just watch the gluten…), Indian food, Chinese food, Italian food, even pizza with no cheese! There are endless recipes for your compassionate palate which are not limited to cookies, cakes, casseroles, muffins… you name it, there’s a cruelty-free way to prepare it! Mother Nature sure is amazing! Everything we need is right there for us! Choosing to keep sentient beings off your menu opens up a whole new world of eating! You will taste things you’ve never had the privilege of tasting before, you will awaken your creativity and your energy will be higher, clearer and cleaner. Plus you will be able to sleep at night, knowing that you did not contribute to the death, misery and torture of animals, of this planet and of your own body. Woohoo!!! Choosing to live your life compassionately is the most freeing experience! Not only are you freeing yourself of disease, but you are also freeing the animals of a life of misery. Everyone wins! Take control of your mind, body and soul. Experience the joys of a clean, compassionate kitchen. Be the reason that an animal brother or sister is spared a life of misery. When you change your diet, the entire world will change….Are you ready? “One should not kill a living being, nor cause it to be killed, nor should one incite another to kill. Do not injure any being, either strong or weak, in the world.” - Buddha
